    BEAUMIER U.P. HERITAGE CENTER The Beaumier Upper Peninsula Heritage Center is a historical museum and educational facility on the campus of Northern Michigan University. The mission of the U.P. Heritage Center is to promote and preserve the history and culture of the Upper Peninsula through an active slate of exhibitions and engaging public programs for the whole region. The center also collects and preserves artifacts related to the history of Northern Michigan University. The center maintains a gallery in Gries Hall and several other displays throughout campus.

    Planning for the new Jamrich Hall started in 2009 with the goal of “providing an efficient, state-of-the-art facility that improves academic delivery, maximizes building use and reduces overall operational and maintenance costs.” New Jamrich Hall officially opened on Aug. 18, 2014 as a replacement to Jamrich Hall. This 133,000 square foot state-of-the-art building features a new, 3-story classroom facility with a connector walkway to the NMU Learning Resources Center. Some of the features include: One 500-seat lecture hall with a stage (to be used for instruction, movie showing, prominent speakers, etc.) Three 80-seat lecture rooms with tiered seating 24 active learning classrooms designed to encourage collaborative learning 106 administrative offices and support areas Three meeting rooms Nine teaching assistant suites Six informal learning areas in the large corridor areas New Starbucks. New Jamrich houses five academic department offices (English, criminal justice, sociology and anthropology, the social work department, and the math and computer science department) and is LEED certified, meaning that it’s construction meets the standards of sustainability and energy efficiency set forth by the U.S. Green Building Council.

    The complex is located north on NMU’s North Campus (on Sugar Loaf Avenue) and spans nearly five acres. It is home to the College of Technology and Occupational Sciences which is composed of the Department of Technology and Occupational Sciences. The facility is also home to the Department of Engineering Technology, and Continuing Education and Workforce Development. Additionally, the facility houses Northern Initiatives, a community development financial institution; the NMU Regional Police Academy; a branch of the Academic Career and Advisement Center; UP North Films, specializing in documentaries; and Head Start preschool. The Jacobetti Complex features more than 40 specialized laboratories and classrooms. Students learn skills in the mechanical and electrical engineering, aviation maintenance, hospitality management, cosmetology, automotive repair, construction management, building technology, electronics, industrial technology and skilled trades such as HVAC, welding, industrial maintenance and computer numerical control (CNC). A large lobby area, known as “the commons,” provides tables and seating for studying, discussions or enjoying food from the student-run Culinary Café. The upscale Chez Nous restaurant nearby serves as a training ground for cooking and hospitality services. The complex is named for longtime Upper Peninsula Representative Dominic J. Jacobetti.

    Physical Education Instructional Facility (PEIF) More commonly called the PEIF, the Physcial Education Instructional Facility opened in 1976.  The facility houses the PEIF pool, which is home to the NMU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, and Vandament Arena, where the Wildcat volleyball team plays. The PEIF also houses a two-level recreation center, renovated in December 1999, complete with a climbing wall, weight room, cardiovascular area, two basketball courts, two lounge areas, and a Wildcat Fit station.  Also located in the PEIF are six racquetball courts, a golf simulator, a dance studio and fitness room, athletic training facilities, locker rooms, and classrooms as well as an auxiliary gymnasium that the Wildcat men’s and women’s basketball teams use for practice.  The PEIF pool features eight lanes and a diving tank with one and three meter springboards. The PEIF offers a variety of services to the community at large, such as swimming lessons, American Red Cross certification courses, youth summer camps, sports camps and birthday parties.  For more information on renting areas within the PEIF, call 906-227-2519 or stop by the Recreational Sports main office, PEIF 126.

    Northern Michigan University’s physical campus is made up of more than 50 facilities. It is located just minutes from the shore of Lake Superior and downtown Marquette, Mich. View the campus map here. The campus has been named one of the “most unwired” (wireless) campuses in the United States.  It is also completely wired and covered by a WiMax (4G) network. The campus’s main quad, or academic mall as it is called at NMU, consists of the Learning Resources Center and Olson Library, Jamrich Hall, the Seaborg Science Complex and the Hedgcock Student Service Center.  The arts plaza is right down the sidewalk from Jamrich and includes Forest Roberts Theatre, Thomas Fine Arts and McClintock buildings. The other main academic facilities are Whitman Hall and the Jacobetti Complex. The majority of  classes are held in Jamrich, New Science, West Science, Thomas Fine Arts, Forest Roberts Theatre and McClintock. There are 10 residential areas on the campus. The campus also features several high-end specialty computer labs, a speech and hearing clinic, two art galleries, two on-campus radio stations, a public TV station, a university center with a bookstore, and one of the premier sports complexes of the Midwest, which includes the Superior Dome – the largest wooden dome in the world. One aspect of the NMU campus that students say they enjoy is that everything is within easy walking distance.

    The University Center, or U.C. as it’s commonly called, is a key gathering place for not only the campus community, but for Marquette County and the Upper Peninsula as well. Its flexible conference facilities include the Great Lakes rooms, which can be expanded or divided for large or small groups. A total of 14 multi-purpose rooms can serve up to 600 guests. Banquet services are also available. The Wildcat Den, a cafeteria-style restaurant on the second floor of the center, is open to the public and features a variety of food stations and daily specials. Also in the center is the NMU Bookstore on the first floor, offering textbooks, school supplies, university apparel and gifts as well as a U.S. Post Office branch. University I.D.s and an EZ ticket outlet are located in the Wildcat Express Center near the bookstore. Northern Initiatives, a business and community development corporation with ties to Northern, is also located on the main floor. Also in the University Center: NMU Financial Trading Lab Student organization and activities offices Health Promotion Office… WUPX studios, the student run-radio station The North Wind editorial offices, the student-run newspaper Peter White Lounge, for relaxed studying or for small gatherings Student Art Gallery A meditation room The Alumni Suite, which can used by alumni for conducting business or an overnight stay An enclosed walkway connects the center to Gries Hall. The University Center is named after Don Hollis Bottum, who was dean of men, director of housing, and principal of the John D. Pierce Laboratory School, working at Northern from 1923 to 1959.
